Using the Nikon Z fc for Wildlife Photography

I mentioned in my previous post that one of the main reasons for switching to the Z mount lenses was the weight. Actually I checked and the 70-200mm F-mount lens weighs in at 50.5 oz. The Z mount equivalent is 48 oz. It’s 2 oz less, which is not much of a difference.

But when you use the FTZ II adapter, which your need to use for F mount lenses to connect to the mirrorless Z camera, that weighs in at 4.5 oz. Now you’re talking 6.5 oz. Comparing the teleconverters, the TC-20E III teleconverter weighs 11.6 oz while the TC-2.0x Z teleconverter weighs 9.6 oz. So the Z tele weighs  2 oz less.

Comparing the total F mount configuration with the Z brings the total weight of 66.5 oz whereas the Z mount is 57.6 oz. This is  8.9 oz lighter using the Z compared to the F. That might not seem like much, but when you’re out their photographing Eagles at my age, I can use all the weight relief I can get!
