Still life light painting fine art print by Bobby Izquierdo

Some images are planned. Others arrive as metaphors you can’t ignore.

71 Seconds to Midnight was created during the COVID-19 pandemic — a time when I genuinely believed this could be the end of us all. The world felt unstable, surreal, and dangerously close to collapse. Every day felt like we were inching toward something irreversible.

This piece is my personal metaphor for the Doomsday Clock.

The red clock in the scene represents those terrifying headlines announcing that humanity was seconds away from midnight — the symbolic end of the world. The Geiger counter represents invisible danger — radiation, contagion, threat — something you can’t see, but you know could kill you.

COVID felt like that.

We measured life in terms of case numbers rather than minutes.
We were all waiting for the next surge… the following variant… the next blow.

The world felt like it was 71 seconds away from midnight.

As with all my still-life work, this image was created using light painting. In complete darkness, I illuminated the objects one small area at a time, then combined multiple exposures to make the final photograph. Every highlight, reflection, and shadow was shaped with intention — to amplify the tension and unease of that moment in history.

This photograph is a time capsule of one of the darkest, most emotionally disorienting periods of our lifetime. It captures fear, fragility, and the haunting reality that the fate of humanity can shift suddenly… silently… invisibly.
