Goodness Gracious Juice Bar, 2021 Architectural Nightscape by Bobby Izquierdo

Goodness Gracious Juice Bar nightscape captures a colorful piece of Pittsboro that no longer exists in its original form. When I first photographed Goodness Gracious, its aquamarine exterior and round signage immediately caught my attention. The colors and shapes reminded me of Miami, where I lived from 1972 through 1988. The building carried that same bright and nostalgic South Florida atmosphere, which made it a perfect subject for my Architectural Nightscapes of Pittsboro series.

What made the location even more memorable was its unusual connection to a car wash. That unexpected pairing gave the building personality and visual charm. The combination of color, signage, and architecture created a scene that felt both playful and cinematic.

Creating the Goodness Gracious Juice Bar Nightscape

Over time, Goodness Gracious closed, and a Hawaiian barbecue restaurant replaced it. Along with the business itself, much of the original character disappeared. The aquamarine paint, distinctive signage, and visual identity no longer exist. Because of that change, this Goodness Gracious Juice Bar nightscape now serves as a visual record of a local landmark that many people in Pittsboro still remember.

Like many of my architectural nightscapes, I photographed the image during blue hour. The soft evening light gave me a balanced foundation while preserving subtle detail throughout the scene. Later, during post-processing, I transformed the photograph into a handcrafted nightscape.

Light, Atmosphere, and Architectural Storytelling

During the editing process, I darkened the sky and reshaped the mood of the scene to create a more cinematic atmosphere. I also added selective lighting to emphasize important architectural details throughout the composition.

For example, I highlighted the round sign and portions of the front façade to increase depth, contrast, and visual focus. Through careful lighting control, I guide the viewer’s eye toward the features that originally drew me to the building.

Rather than simply documenting the structure, I wanted this Goodness Gracious Juice Bar nightscape to reflect the way I experienced the location emotionally. The final image combines memory, atmosphere, and architectural storytelling into a single scene.
