Still Life Light Painting Wildflowers on Rustic Wood by Bobby Izquierdo

Inspiration doesn’t always arrive on schedule. Sometimes it hides in the ordinary, waiting for the right light—or in this case, the right moment. My fine art still life photograph Wildflowers on Rustic Wood is a story of patience, collaboration, and the beauty of nature meeting craftsmanship.

A fellow photographer and woodturner from my camera club loaned me a striking piece of rustic wood, suggesting I might find a way to incorporate it into one of my still life compositions. I eagerly accepted, captivated by its texture and the warmth of its grain. But for months, no arrangement felt right. The wood sat untouched in my studio, a silent reminder that art can’t be rushed.

Then one afternoon, while walking through my Pittsboro neighborhood with my wife, I noticed a wildflower bush glowing in the sunlight—tiny yellow blooms intertwined with red and purple berries and vibrant green stems. In that instant, I saw the finished photograph in my mind. The wildflowers and the rustic wood belonged together.

Back in my studio, I arranged the wildflowers across the wooden panel in a flat-lay composition, placing my camera on a tripod about six feet above the stage. From this elevated perspective, I captured the balance of color, texture, and light that defines my still life photography.

After photographing the composition, I refined the image in Photoshop, carefully adjusting tone and orientation. What began as a horizontal flat-lay became a vertical portrait—transforming the perspective and giving the image a painterly quality.
Wildflowers on Rustic Wood embodies harmony: the handcrafted and the natural, the ephemeral and the lasting. It reminds me that sometimes, the best creative moments unfold in their own time.
